Browse Milwaukee County ZIP Codes

Postal lines can narrow a search in Milwaukee County, but they do not follow every city, village or neighborhood boundary. The Milwaukee ZIP code directory is most useful as a first geographic filter. Confirm the code for a known address, compare it with the parcel map, and identify the municipality before choosing a records office. A Milwaukee mailing label can point to a parcel governed by a neighboring city or village. To find resident records ZIP code by ZIP code, keep postal geography separate from property ownership, voter data and proof that a person actually occupies an address.

Milwaukee ZIP Code Coverage

The Milwaukee ZIP code directory reflects postal delivery areas, not municipal borders. The county's commonly listed service ZIPs run through two main number groups: the south-county 531 series and the Milwaukee-area 532 series. Several codes cross two or more municipalities, so the city or village must be checked before choosing an assessor, clerk, or permit office.

The county list also includes 53122, 53126, 53127, 53128 and the wider 532 series through 53295. An official single station list was not found for every code, so station names should be verified through USPS rather than guessed. Codes 53201 and 53234 receive PO-box treatment in current city material and should not be read as ordinary neighborhood polygons.

Milwaukee ZIP Directory Belts

The 53110 to 53172 group identifies much of Milwaukee County's southern suburban belt. Cudahy, Greendale, Hales Corners, Franklin, Oak Creek and South Milwaukee each keep local assessment and permit records even though countywide deeds remain with the Milwaukee County Register of Deeds. ZIP geography narrows the area, but municipality identifies the right local counter.

The 532 group covers Milwaukee and many inner-ring suburbs. Wauwatosa overlaps with 53213, 53222, 53225 and 53226. West Allis and West Milwaukee share postal areas with Milwaukee in 53214 and 53219. These overlaps are useful search clues, not proof of city residence.

Milwaukee County also borders postal polygons from neighboring counties. A live county GIS layer can display nearby codes that are not county service ZIPs. Compare the county's official list with the actual address in USPS before placing a parcel in Milwaukee County.

Verify a Milwaukee ZIP Code

USPS ZIP Code Lookup offers three routes. Each answers a different postal question and none identifies every resident in an area.

USPS modeInputResult
By AddressStreet address plus city and state, or address plus ZIPThe postal ZIP for that address
By City and StatePostal city and stateZIPs used for that city label
Cities by ZIPFive-digit ZIPPostal city names served

USPS warns that a result does not prove a person or company is at the address. That myth matters in Milwaukee, where a mailing city can differ from the parcel municipality and record custodian. Use the result to validate the postal label, then use the parcel map to establish jurisdiction.

Postal limit. A Milwaukee ZIP result confirms delivery geography only. It does not confirm an occupant, property owner, neighborhood boundary or city limit.

Map Milwaukee ZIP Polygons

Map Milwaukee Property Information supports address and taxkey searches, layer controls, selection, measurement, queries and spreadsheet export. Turning on the ZIP layer shows how a postal area overlaps parcels, wards and other mapped areas. It is a better tool for shape than for people.

The Milwaukee County Land Information Office supplies county GIS applications and parcel downloads, though municipal attribute detail varies. Its 2026 notice describes hosted-layer migration and service retirements, so saved viewer links can age. Begin from the current LIO page.

Map layers should be named in notes because ZIP, neighborhood, ward, historic district and parcel municipality answer different questions. A lakefront or downtown property may fall within all of them at once without any boundary being wrong.

Note: Record the map layer name and retrieval date because Milwaukee GIS services, district lines and parcel attributes can change.

Milwaukee ZIP Search Limits

There is no official portal that takes one Milwaukee ZIP and returns every person living inside it. The assessor shows ownership and parcel facts, not all occupants. MyVote is a personal match tool. Utility customer and delivery lists are not public resident directories. A ZIP-wide credential filter, where a portal offers one, covers only that regulated field.

Use official records for the fact each was made to hold. A parcel record can establish a recorded owner and mailing address. A deed can establish a transfer. A voter record can show registration and participation, never ballot choice. The post office establishes delivery geography.

Milwaukee ZIPs Versus City Limits

The clearest Milwaukee ZIP code directory example is 53217. It spans Bayside, Fox Point, Glendale, River Hills and Whitefish Bay. Code 53209 similarly covers parts of Brown Deer, Glendale and River Hills along with Milwaukee postal geography. A requester who assumes that either code means the City of Milwaukee may contact the wrong assessor or clerk.

Codes 53214 and 53219 show the same problem on the west and south sides. Each crosses Milwaukee and neighboring municipalities. The situs city, meaning the municipality where the parcel physically lies, can differ from the mailing city printed in an address. Check the parcel boundary before filing a public-record request.

ZIP vs ZIP+4
A five-digit delivery area versus a four-digit add-on that narrows a delivery segment.
PO-box ZIP
A code assigned mainly or only to post-office boxes, not a neighborhood polygon.
Unique ZIP
A code assigned to one high-volume organization rather than a general area.
Carrier route
A postal delivery sequence within one or more ZIP areas.

No official dated Milwaukee County ZIP realignment history was located in the research. Current USPS and municipal sources should be used for a present-day address rather than inventing a split date.

Municipal responsibility must be resolved before a ZIP-based records request. Milwaukee County has 19 municipalities, and each may keep separate assessment, permit, clerk, court, cemetery, or license files. Start with the county parcel or GIS record to identify the situs municipality. A City of Milwaukee mailing label does not by itself place a parcel under the City Assessor, and the City search does not cover every suburban parcel in the county.

ZIP 53217 demonstrates why the extra check matters: it reaches several North Shore municipalities with different local custodians. The same caution applies to codes that cross Milwaukee, West Allis, West Milwaukee, Greenfield, Brown Deer, Glendale, or River Hills. Once the municipality is known, use its assessor or clerk for local records and the Milwaukee County Register of Deeds for recorded land instruments. Countywide deed coverage and local assessment coverage are different layers.

For historical work, keep the postal code separate from the address evidence. Milwaukee city directories begin long before ZIP codes and use the street forms current in each volume. The 1930 Milwaukee address converter and the 1931 Wauwatosa street-name supplement may be needed before a modern ZIP can help locate the same parcel. A ZIP code directory organizes current postal geography; it should not be projected backward onto a year when that code or street form did not exist.
